From symptom to the likely DAF component.

Most DAF XF/CF driveability faults trace back to one of a handful of components — the variable-geometry turbo, its VGT actuator, the EGR valve, the exhaust back-pressure valve or an MX engine-brake solenoid. Use the symptom patterns below to narrow the cause, then jump to the matching fault codes and OEM numbers.

Four steps before you order a part

01

Read the stored fault codes

Pull active and stored P-codes with DAVIE or a generic reader. Note freeze-frame data — the code plus the conditions it set under narrows the cause far more than the code alone.

02

Match the symptom pattern

Cross-reference what the driver reports (power loss, limp mode, smoke, weak engine brake) against the component groups below. The same code can have more than one root cause.

03

Verify before condemning the part

Check charge pipes, intercooler and connectors for leaks, oil film or corrosion first. Compare actual vs commanded boost while the fault is present, and run the actuator sweep cold and hot.

04

Confirm the exact OEM number

Once you have a likely component, confirm by VIN, engine, installed connector and a photo of the part label before ordering — duplicate OEM references are common.

Match the complaint to the component

Symptoms and fault codes below are aggregated from the DAF component reports in our database. They point you to the likely branch — always confirm with live data before ordering.

Turbocharger Holset HE400VG, HE500VG, HY35W and HX35W turbocharger fault lookup.

Symptoms drivers and mechanics report

  • Loss of power uphill or under trailer load
  • Limp mode after sustained hot operation
  • Turbo whistle, siren noise or squeal above 1500 rpm
  • Black smoke under acceleration from underboost
  • Blue smoke at idle from oil seal leakage
  • Fuel consumption noticeably above baseline
  • MX engine brake feels weak because back pressure is not controlled correctly
  • Loss of boost above 1200 rpm

Linked fault codes

Verification tips

  • Run the VGT actuator sweep cold and again after a loaded road test; failures that only appear hot usually indicate mechanical vane binding, not only electronics.
  • Inspect charge pipes and intercooler for oil film, split hoses or leaks before condemning the turbo.
  • Check actual boost vs commanded boost while the fault is present.
Actuator VGT actuator fault lookup for DAF MX Euro 6 turbochargers.

Symptoms drivers and mechanics report

  • Truck in limp mode with RPM capped around 1300
  • No boost until the engine is well past 1200 rpm
  • Turbo hunts or surges instead of building boost smoothly
  • Actuator clicks but vane lever barely moves
  • Intermittent limp mode after hot restart
  • Exhaust brake retard force is reduced
  • VGT actuator self-test fails in diagnostic software

Linked fault codes

Verification tips

  • Detach the actuator linkage and verify that the turbo vane lever moves freely through its travel.
  • If a new actuator fails immediately, suspect mechanical vane lock inside the turbine housing.
  • Scope the position feedback signal if the fault is intermittent and temperature dependent.
EGR valve EGR valve fault lookup for DAF MX-11 and MX-13 engines.

Symptoms drivers and mechanics report

  • Power derate or limp mode
  • EGR valve stuck open or stuck closed in diagnostic software
  • Rough idle, hunting or surging at cruise
  • Black smoke when pulling away or backing under a trailer
  • Failed regeneration and high DPF differential pressure
  • Coolant loss with no visible external leak
  • AdBlue or NOx after-cat secondary faults from incorrect EGR rate
  • Power loss under load

Linked fault codes

Verification tips

  • Compare commanded EGR position against actual feedback during key-on sweep and during a road test.
  • Inspect for coolant traces inside EGR passages if white smoke or unexplained coolant loss is reported.
  • Do not treat every NOx or AdBlue fault as SCR-only; incorrect EGR rate can trigger secondary aftertreatment faults.
Back pressure valve Exhaust back pressure valve and engine-brake pressure-control lookup.

Symptoms drivers and mechanics report

  • Distinct lack of power under load
  • Severe hesitation during acceleration
  • Engine protection or torque limitation active
  • Poor warm-up from cold
  • Loss of secondary engine braking
  • Exhaust chuffing or harsh barking when engine brake is used
  • Engine brake suddenly weak or completely dead on descents
  • Slow turbo spool and flat take-off after throttle lift

Linked fault codes

Verification tips

  • Run the BPV pre-operational sweep and compare commanded vs actual valve position.
  • If the code returns after actuator replacement, inspect the butterfly shaft for binding.
  • Because 1944459 is also reported as a Holset HE500VG turbo number, verify the physical part before quoting.
Fuel / brake / bypass valve Pump-unit, bypass and MX engine-brake solenoid fault lookup.

Symptoms drivers and mechanics report

  • Reduced motor power and lazy spool-up
  • Truck smokes more on hard acceleration
  • Boost comes and goes instead of building cleanly
  • Cold-start warm-up takes too long
  • Coolant temperature slow to rise
  • Engine protection during DPF regeneration attempt
  • Engine misfire on cylinder 1
  • Rough idle and vibration

Linked fault codes

Verification tips

  • Use the fault code family to decide whether the customer is describing fuel-pressure bypass or EGR cooler bypass.
  • Inspect harness continuity and short-to-ground before replacing the valve.
  • Check gear/lift pump debris before replacing expensive injectors or unit pumps one by one.
